The
Drill Doctor
The Drill doctor has been around
now for almost 7 years since it was first available in
1997. Since that time the company has sold over 1 Million
units! One of our staffers, John, was pleased to have received one of
the top models to try out and test (the Pro 500 the one pictured
to the right) John bought one
of the first models back in early 1999 and says he religiously
uses it to save money and extend the life of his drill bits.
He was eager to to test out the new version and to see how well it
worked. Here is John's rendition of his first use:
As soon a I opened the box it was very evident that it looked
much different than my original one. It was a bit larger
and seemed to have many more features, such as a viewing window
and two angles adjustments,
118° or 135°, the carrying case made it that much more
attractive. Being the expert I am at using my old one, I
found myself familiar with how to use it,
however
it came with a great instructional video as well. I did
have one problem, I did not have any dull bits! So I got
out a 1/4" piece of steel and my drill press and went to work. My first victim was a
5/16" bit then I did a larger 3/8" and finally a 1/2" I'd like
to tell you in a matter of minutes I was ready to use the Drill
Doctor, but this took me all afternoon. 6 pieces of
steel later, I was ready to test the Drill Doctor. It
was nice to have number molded in the unit that tells you what
to do first. With the added features it was a help to get
things started. In about 5 minutes I re-sharpened all the bits,
got out a fresh piece of 1/4" steel and like a "hot knife and
butter" the hole was made, the bit was as sharp as the day I
bought it. The new unit seemed to be much quicker and
quieter than my old one. When I found out the cost I was
very surprised that they had actually come down in price since I
bought mine. I have always loved my Drill Doctor and highly
recommend one to everyone. Thanks John.
Before we received the Drill Doctor we got a nice story from
them about a Cobra builder in Colorado. We asked if we
could verify the story and sure enough everything was true so we
would like to share it with you now.
Dull Drill Bits Don’t Stop Kit Builder Bob Cowan
Colorado Springs, CO -- Bob Cowan is spending his free time
building an all aluminum Cobra – a full size replica. Bob’s been
building cars since he was a kid. He’s now in his 40s. As most
hobbyists know, the real fun is making modifications to these
cars. The downside is that fabricating a model car requires a
massive amount of riveting – every 1 ˝ inches for this
particular kit. Along with the riveting comes dull drill bits.
And when it’s Wednesday night at 8 pm, Bob would rather be doing
things like adding a 600 horsepower big bore engine to his kit
cars than running to Sear’s for new drill bits.
Fortunately for Bob, there’s a tool that quickly gets him back
on track and lets him reuse his old drill bits – over and over
and over again – the Drill Doctor from Professional Tool
Manufacturing, LLC (www.drilldoctor.com). Bob’s always known
that once you have a decent drill motor, a sharp bit is the key
to getting work done.
In
the recent past, Bob would easily spend $50-$60 dollars on a set
of drill bits every year. No more. Now, he runs the bits through
the Drill Doctor twice a day, and then he doesn’t have to worry
about the hardware store being open late on a Sunday night. The
last time he bought new drill bits was two years ago.
With dull bits, Bob finds that work can really slow down. At
this point, most people go out and buy more expensive – and more
powerful drills – thinking that a few more AMPs or RPM will help
them get their work done.
Bob’s pretty proud of his solution. He didn’t have to go out and
spend several hundred dollars buying a spiffy new high powered
drill that only helps a little. He’s saving $60 a year on drill
bits that he’d just throw away. He enjoys his hobby more and
gets more done. All because he spent $150 on a Drill Doctor.
So,
back to work for Bob – not exactly a hardship with a garage that
has hot and cold running water and high tension power lines. In
the past, he’s built other Cobras, Mustangs, trucks – all of
which are sold to “fuel” the next project. The fun is in the
creation -- maybe taking a few rounds around the track, doing a
few a car shows, maybe some cruising on a hot summer night. As
for Bob’s “real job,” he’s a Physician Assistant in Family
Practice and in the Emergency Department.
